NWS Newport/Morehead City NC issued a High Surf Advisory at 7:20 PM EDT Thursday, October 8, for Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island. The advisory runs through 8:00 PM EDT Saturday, October 11. Elevated breaking waves in the surf zone are expected along both islands through the weekend.

October is the central month for shore-based fishing on the Outer Banks. Cape Point on Hatteras Island draws surf anglers for red drum and striped bass as water temperatures fall, and false albacore are typically accessible nearshore and from the inlets through October and into November. Elevated surf through Saturday raises the physical hazard for wading anglers in the impact zone and complicates beach-drive access along both islands. A High Surf Advisory does not mean fishing is impossible from all Hatteras and Ocracoke access points, but conditions at exposed beach fronts will be rougher than normal through Saturday evening.

Inlet bar crossings are also affected. Oregon Inlet and Hatteras Inlet are both in the advisory zone; the bars at both inlets are sensitive to swell direction and are more hazardous when surf is elevated. Captains staging for offshore departures from North Carolina inlets should confirm the NWS Morehead City zone forecast before Saturday launches; the advisory runs through 8:00 PM EDT Saturday, and post-advisory conditions depend on how quickly swell settles. Sunday may be a more viable window depending on the forecast update.

Thursday evening, NWS Charleston SC also issued a Rip Current Statement for four Georgia coastal county zones: Coastal Bryan, Coastal Chatham, Coastal Liberty, and Coastal McIntosh. Risk is rated Moderate. That statement expired at 3:30 AM EDT Friday, October 9. Current NWS Charleston products are at weather.gov/chs.

The advisory is active. Current NWS Newport/Morehead City products are at weather.gov/mhx. This is a conditions notice; the NWS zone text for the specific departure water is the pre-launch check.

Update, Saturday October 10 at 2:55 AM EDT: NWS Newport/Morehead City NC re-issued the High Surf Advisory for Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island. End time is unchanged: 8:00 PM EDT Sunday, October 11. The advisory remains active through Sunday evening. Shore and surf anglers on Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island should expect elevated breaking waves through Sunday at Cape Point, the villages, and surf beach access points on both islands. Oregon Inlet and Hatteras Inlet bars remain affected; conditions at exposed inlet crossings are more hazardous when surf is elevated. Sunday offshore departures from Outer Banks inlets should confirm the current NWS Newport/Morehead City zone forecast before launch; advisory expiry at 8:00 PM EDT Sunday does not guarantee settled conditions at inlet bars immediately afterward, and any re-issuance or post-advisory swell data would post at weather.gov/mhx. Current products are at weather.gov/mhx. This is a conditions notice; the NWS zone text for the specific departure water is the pre-launch check.
