Confirm the zone forecast at weather.gov/mhx before any Wednesday or Thursday departure.

Update, October 6 at 6:30 AM EDT: The Gale Watch for NC coastal waters referenced in the previous update is not showing in active NWS Morehead City products. The 2:19 AM EDT MHX marine warning message cancelled the Small Craft Advisory for AMZ152 (Oregon Inlet to Cape Hatteras out 20 nautical miles). The SCA for AMZ154 and AMZ156 (Cape Hatteras to Cape Lookout, out 20 NM) runs through 2:00 PM EDT Tuesday, October 6. The SCA for AMZ158 (Cape Lookout to Surf City, out 20 NM) runs through 5:00 PM EDT Tuesday. Offshore NC zones carry no active Gale Watch or Gale Warning as of this update. The developing coastal low track and any new watches or warnings for Wednesday through Friday have not yet produced NWS products. The South Atlantic federal red snapper opener at 12:01 AM EDT Thursday, October 9, remains unchanged. The pre-departure check for any boat staging for Thursday is the current NWS Morehead City zone forecast at weather.gov/mhx, updated each morning.
Update, October 6: NWS Morehead City NC had a Gale Watch in effect for the offshore waters from Cape Hatteras to Ocracoke Inlet, Zone AMZ154, associated with the coastal low expected to develop offshore east of North Carolina Wednesday, October 7. The watch period covered Wednesday afternoon through Friday, October 10. Forecast parameters for that zone: North winds 25 to 35 knots with gusts up to 45 knots, seas 15 to 20 feet. The low is expected to deepen as it moves offshore before tracking north. The current NWS Morehead City NC marine zone products are at weather.gov/mhx.
Update, October 6 at 3:13 AM EDT: NWS Wakefield VA issued a Small Craft Advisory for coastal waters from Cape Charles Light to the Virginia-North Carolina border out 20 nautical miles, and a separate Small Craft Advisory for coastal waters from the Virginia-North Carolina border to Currituck Beach Light NC out 20 nautical miles. Both expire at 10:00 AM EDT Tuesday, October 6. The Gale Watch for Zone ANZ656 that was issued Monday evening is no longer active. New watches or warnings for the Wednesday coastal low development will be issued by NWS Wakefield as the system organizes.
NWS Wakefield VA issued a Gale Watch for Zone ANZ656: Coastal Waters from Cape Charles Light to the Virginia-North Carolina border out 20 nautical miles. A Gale Watch means sustained winds or frequent gusts in the 34-to-47-knot range are possible but not yet certain. Multiple North Carolina coastal zones from the Nags Head area south to the Morehead City area carry Small Craft Advisory status from NWS Morehead City NC and NWS Wilmington NC, with northeast winds 15 to 25 knots and elevated seas. The watch and advisories are tied to the same developing system.
NWS forecast offices describe a strong coastal low developing offshore east of North Carolina by Wednesday, October 7, then tracking north toward the New England coast through the end of the week. That track brings deteriorating conditions to Mid-Atlantic coastal waters, including the Virginia outer coast, the Chesapeake entrance, and the North Carolina coast, from Wednesday into Thursday. Timing and intensity will update as the system organizes; the zone text forecast each morning is the pre-departure check.
Two fishing events fall inside this window. The South Atlantic federal red snapper season opens at 12:01 AM EDT Thursday, October 9, in federal waters off South Carolina and Georgia. The active SC and GA gale warnings expire Tuesday evening; the zone forecast for offshore SC and GA on Wednesday is the critical check before a Thursday departure. Separately, the fall striper and drum run is active in Chesapeake waters and along the North Carolina coast. The first viable departure window from Virginia coastal and Mid-Atlantic ports depends on when the low clears and what residual seas look like after the offshore Hatteras gale window ends Friday.
This is a conditions notice, not a go/no-go recommendation for any vessel. NWS Wakefield VA marine products and zone forecasts for the Virginia coastal zones are at weather.gov/akq. NWS Morehead City NC marine products for the North Carolina coastal zones, including AMZ154, are at weather.gov/mhx. Check the zone text forecast for the specific water before launching.
